Sara and Lee were married just outside of New York City at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle. Their wedding was so special for us on so many levels: Lee was referred to us by our clients, Melissa and David, whose wedding we photographed one week prior in Riviera Maya, Mexico. It was so surreal to see Melissa and David again as one-week newlyweds, at another wedding, in another country (see photo at the bottom of the post). Second, and most important, Sara and Lee trusted us immensely by hiring us outside of their orthodox Jewish community. From Lee:

Simply put, Brian and Allison Callaway of Callaway Gable are the best there is. For our wedding Sara and I wanted something special – and decided to look outside the normal cast of photographers that typically get hired for the orthodox Jewish weddings in New York. We took a risk going with Brian and Allie – would they capture all of the nuanced traditions and ceremonies during our wedding? After receiving our photos, it was evident that our risk paid off…big time. Allie and Brian’s fresh perspective and unparalleled skill yielded photos unlike ones we had ever seen before. They not only allow us to remember our wedding, but more importantly, allow us to relive it! I will say – Be careful, if you go with Callaway Gable – just be prepared to answer the question – “who was your photographer?” about a thousand times.

Finally, If Lee looks a bit familiar, you may have seen him on the NBC hit show, The Apprentice. Chosen from among one million applicants to vie for a position at the Trump Organization, Mr. Bienstock became one of the final two candidates and the youngest finalist in the history of the series. Stay tuned for Lee’s brother’s wedding, which we just photographed a few weeks ago in Brooklyn.

Michal and Solomon were married this past weekend in a traditional Jewish Orthodox ceremony and reception at El Caribe Country Club in Brooklyn, New York. This beautiful portrait of Michal was taken by Allison just before her first look with Solomon. The first look at an Orthodox wedding is always extra special as they have not seen each other for seven days prior to the wedding.

The Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC), a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument*, was founded in 1880. It moved into the current building on Seventh and Olive in 1912, almost 100 years ago. When it opened, it was the only building in Southern California with an above ground swimming pool creating quite an attraction. In the early years it was home to a who’s-who of celebrities like Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Rudolph Valentino, Mary Pickford and George Patton; and over the years, it’s members have won 97 Olympic medals including 47 Gold Medals.

On New Year’s Eve 2011 it was home to the super-festive and classy wedding celebration of Mary and Derek. They both looked so gorgeous and handsome, like movie stars from that beautiful and classy bygone era. Our new best friend Nam Lam of Modern LA Weddings designed the wedding and Shawna Yamamoto created the florals. DJ Nahchey was perfect as usual. The Los Angeles Athletic Club has been renovated and is absolutely beautiful. We cannot wait for more weddings at this historic and eclectic venue.

*Note: There are several other designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments in downtown Los Angeles that are wedding/event venues including Vibiana, Oviatt Penthouse/Cicada and Union Station.

The collage  contains 76 squares, and represents a shoot about every 4.5 days. When you consider that many events are multiple days (Indian wedding days, rehearsal dinners, day after shoots, etc), then the number is more like every 3.5 days throughout 2011.

Paul and Wendy came to us with a very interesting concept for their Day After Shoot. In Paul’s words, “We thought the “story” of newlyweds, still in their suit and dress, arriving at their remote honeymoon hotel only to find it abandoned could make for some arresting images. But of course we want them to be happy shots, so the idea would be a couple – like us – who really enjoy each others company whatever the circumstances are making the best of things.” This was photographed on location in the freezing California high desert in November – it was so cold. Bravo to Paul and Wendy for coming up with such a cool concept and handling the cold as well as they did!
