The Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC), a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument*, was founded in 1880. It moved into the current building on Seventh and Olive in 1912, almost 100 years ago. When it opened, it was the only building in Southern California with an above ground swimming pool creating quite an attraction. In the early years it was home to a whos-who of celebrities like Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Rudolph Valentino, Mary Pickford and George Patton; and over the years, its members have won 97 Olympic medals including 47 Gold Medals.
On New Years Eve 2011 it was home to the super-festive and classy wedding celebration of Mary and Derek. They both looked so gorgeous and handsome, like movie stars from that beautiful and classy bygone era. Our new best friend Nam Lam of Modern LA Weddings designed the wedding and Shawna Yamamoto created the florals. DJ Nahchey was perfect as usual. The Los Angeles Athletic Club has been renovated and is absolutely beautiful. We cannot wait for more weddings at this historic and eclectic venue.
*Note: There are several other designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments in downtown Los Angeles that are wedding/event venues including Vibiana, Oviatt Penthouse/Cicada and Union Station.
